The literal meaning of Sikkim is “hill top,” and synonymous to its name Sikkim is full of glistering mountains and ridges, descending down the hillside in steep tiers. Apart from the sightseeing, Gangtok is famous for its religious sites and the beautiful view of Mount Khangchendzonga soaring above the horizon.

The economy of the state was affected by the war as the trade routes with Tibet were closed, but that has changed to a large extent the hospitality and tourism industry taking centre stage in recent times.

Since the colonial times, Gangtok was the trade center for both India and Tibet. One feels invigorated and relaxed once they soak in the culture of Gangtok. With its immaculate, un-spoilt natural beauty and peaceful people, Sikkim offers a unique experience to the visitors.

By Air: The airport nearest to Gangtok is Bagdogra, West Bengal, about 124 kilometres away.

By Train: The nearest railway station to Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri, about 148 kilometres away.

By Road: Gangtok is well linked by road with Siliguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong as one can choose for National Highway 31A to reach the region.
